I am indeed what you might call an animal person. Both the living and the dead and in all forms, I’m astonished constantly by what they can teach us and how much they give to us; the complexity of anatomies, evolutions, instincts and behaviours. You can be staring into the bony cavity of the ape’s eye sockets and seeing your own story or smiling at the dribble coming out of the donkey’s nose as he brays his hello at you. The wonders of natural history or the softness and warmth of a beating heart, it’s all endlessly inspiring and beautiful to me. I feel deeply moved by the rawness and ferocity of survival to the gentle unconditional companionship and total trust they give us in return for our love.
That’s why I could never, ever eat one.
